After a four-year hiatus, Omega has decided to resurrect the much-loved First Omega in Space (FOiS), a model that originally debuted in 2012 to honor the historical moment when an Omega chronograph was worn in space. This comeback comes with some exciting yet subtle updates that drastically enhance its aesthetic appeal.

The original FOiS was the CK2998, which saw production from 1959 to 1962. This particular model became part of history when NASA astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra wore it during his Sigma 7 mission. Notably, Schirra purchased this watch with his own funds three years before the Omega Speedmaster gained recognition as the first chronograph certified for manned space missions. The CK2998 boasted a sleek design with Alpha hands and a black bezel, bridging the gap to the contemporary design cues associated with modern Speedmasters. It featured straight lugs and a symmetrical case, reflecting a classic yet straightforward aesthetic.

The new FOiS breathes new life into the original design by introducing a captivating CVD-coated blue-grey dial, reminiscent of some CK 2998 models from the 1960s that became quite the buzz on Instagram. While one of those original dials may have eluded my search, the revived version incorporates the step design reintroduced with the 2012 FOiS. It also maintains the same logo and markings as the original watch. Adding to its vintage charm, the new hands and dial utilize a creamy, vintage-inspired luminescent material, a nod to the character that aging brings to a classic timepiece.

The stainless-steel case measures a comfortable 39.7 mm in diameter, 13.4 mm thick, and features a 48 mm lug-to-lug distance with a 19 mm lug width. Water-resistant up to 50 meters, the case preserves the symmetrical design with straight lugs—albeit with a slightly different shape from the recent 321 Speedmaster model. The watch is topped with a Sapphire crystal designed to mimic the vintage feel of a Hesalite crystal and features a period-correct Dot-Over-Ninety (DON) aluminum bezel insert. Powering the watch is the Master Chronometer-certified caliber 3861, already found in other Speedmaster Professional models, providing a 50-hour power reserve and featuring a Co-Axial escapement. This robust machinery is encapsulated in a commemorative caseback that proudly displays "The First Omega In Space" along with the date "October 3, 1962."

In terms of pricing, the new FOiS is positioned between other Professional models within the Omega lineup, retailing at $7,900. It arrives with a stylish steel flat link bracelet featuring an easy-adjust system, while a strap option is also available at a slightly lower price point. Although this watch is not a limited edition, its anticipated popularity may make it difficult to acquire in the coming months.

As a new enthusiast in the world of Speedmasters and without firsthand experience of the CK2998 watches in their pristine form, I'm particularly drawn to the vintage-inspired aesthetics of this new release. The decision to incorporate “fauxtina” lume aligns perfectly with the nostalgic flair of this timepiece, offering warmth and character against the striking blue dial. Omega has once again shown its mastery in creating watches that resonate with both history and modern sensibilities.
