OpenAI is taking a bold step in simplifying user onboarding by testing a new feature that allows individuals in the U.S. and India to register for ChatGPT using only their phone numbers—no email address required! This significant move was initially discovered by software engineer Tibor Blaho.

Currently, the feature is in its beta phase, but there are specific limitations to be aware of. Users who create an account with their phone numbers will not have the option to upgrade to OpenAI’s premium services, such as ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro, unless they verify their accounts via an email address. Additionally, multi-factor authentication won't be available without this email verification either. Once a phone number has been linked to a ChatGPT account, it cannot be used for creating another account, which could lead to issues with reused or recycled numbers, as the company warns on its new Q&A page. Users encountering problems of this nature may have to reach out to support or wait for a system update that is currently anticipated to arrive in 2025.

Interestingly, while OpenAI is testing this feature, there are no plans to expand the phone number-only sign-ups to other countries at this time. This testing phase appears to be part of OpenAI's broader strategy to enhance user acquisition by reducing barriers to entry for their products, particularly ChatGPT.
