SINGAPORE: In a significant step towards regional growth, OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, announced on October 9 that it plans to open a new office in Singapore later this year. This initiative reflects OpenAI's commitment to expanding its footprint across the Asia Pacific while fostering innovation in artificial intelligence (AI).

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized Singapore's status as a frontrunner in the AI landscape, expressing enthusiasm for forging partnerships within the country's vibrant tech ecosystem.

During Tech Week Singapore, OpenAI revealed its strategic intentions, highlighting the increasing demand for advanced AI solutions across the Asia Pacific. To fortify this initiative, OpenAI has entered a partnership with AI Singapore, pledging up to US$1 million to develop resources, including vital open datasets. This effort aims to ensure that AI models reflect the linguistic and cultural diversity of Southeast Asia.

Dr. Leslie Teo, senior director of AI products at AI Singapore, stated, "This collaboration will enhance the quality and availability of Southeast Asian data, ultimately fostering the growth and adoption of innovative AI technologies in our region."

With the local office, OpenAI plans to collaborate closely with local agencies like the Economic Development Board (EDB) to bolster Singapore's AI ecosystem and create an AI-powered future beneficial to all. Jacqueline Poh, managing director of EDB, acknowledged the significance of OpenAI’s decision, noting that it reinforces the strength of Singapore's burgeoning AI landscape with anticipated multiplier effects on the economy.

To lead these regional initiatives, OpenAI has appointed Oliver Jay as managing director for international operations. He will be based in Singapore and tasked with overseeing the company’s global expansion efforts.

In an exciting development for local tech enthusiasts, OpenAI is set to host its inaugural Developer Day in Singapore on November 21. The event aims to unite the region’s thriving community of developers and startups focused on shaping the future of AI.
