Amritsar – The 555th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev
The 555th Parkash Purb, or birth anniversary, of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, has transformed into a contentious political event in Pakistan. Supporters of the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, specifically from his political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have controversially used this sacred occasion to garner support from attendees.
A widely circulated video on social media captures PTI leader Mahinderpal Singh leading a group of Sikh pilgrims, as they shower Pakistani currency notes on a photograph of Khan. The same footage features a woman gleefully performing a song titled “jail Adiala qedi 804,” celebrating Khan, while others join in a dance. Imran Khan is currently detained at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, identified by the prisoner number 804.
This spectacle has ignited significant backlash, with many denouncing the ostentatious display of wealth and the politicization of a religious celebration. Critics argue that politicizing a spiritual event undermines the significance of Guru Nanak's teachings, which emphasize equality, humility, and service to others.
Extraordinary Security Measures in Pakistan
In tandem with this controversy, Pakistan has implemented extraordinary security measures for the thousands of Sikh pilgrims converging at Nankana Sahib to commemorate this significant occasion. With regional tensions rising, especially as India has withdrawn its sports teams from participating in events in Pakistan due to safety concerns, the safety of Sikh devotees has become a primary focus.
Celebrations in India
The Sikh community has also been active in celebrating the occasion beyond Pakistan. In Jharkhand, India, gatherings in Ranchi and Gumla witnessed vibrant celebrations, with prominent figures, including Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, highlighting the enduring relevance of Guru Nanak's messages of compassion and equality.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway in Mumbai, where the local Sikh community is set to mark the birth anniversary through a three-day festival starting November 15th. Events will include colorful processions, devotional singing, and community meals at gurdwaras, drawing thousands of attendees in neighborhoods like GTB Nagar, Dadar, and Ghatkopar.
