SINGAPORE: In a bold move ahead of the 2025 General Election, the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) has announced that Mr. Xie Yao Quan will be their candidate for the newly established Jurong Central single-member constituency (SMC). This newly drawn ward, which encompasses 29,620 voters, is one of six new SMCs resulting from a recent electoral boundary review.
Meet Mr. Xie: A Familiar Face in Jurong!
Mr. Xie, well-known in the area, currently serves as the Member of Parliament for the Jurong Central division under the larger Jurong GRC, a position he’s held since his debut in the political arena in 2020. Notably, he has been the chairman of the Jurong-Clementi Town Council for the past five years, showcasing his deep commitment to the community.
At the party's recent press conference, Xie expressed his gratitude to the residents: "In these five years, I’ve walked the ground, listened deeply to residents, and put my heart into all that I’ve done to serve residents." This dedication has undoubtedly earned him the trust of the community.
A Homecoming for the Community Volunteer!
Addressing the residents of Jurong East, now part of Jurong Central SMC, Xie revealed a personal touch, stating, "This is, in a way, a homecoming for me," referencing his role as a community volunteer in the area from 2015 to 2020.
Get Ready for a Thrilling Contest!
Xie is gearing up for a competitive electoral battle, with the opposition party Red Dot United already expressing their intent to contest this vital seat. The atmosphere is charged as both candidates prepare to rally support.
Strategic Changes in Boundaries!
The Jurong Central SMC was crafted from parts of Jurong GRC and Yuhua SMC, aiming to maintain a balanced MP-to-voter ratio amid Singapore's population growth, especially in regions like Bukit Batok West and Tengah. This restructuring is a vital strategy to ensure representation aligns with demographic changes.

Additionally, the PAP slate for the adjacent Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC is formidable, featuring key figures such as Grace Fu (Minister for Sustainability and Environment), Rahayu Mahzam (Minister of State for Health and Digital Development), Murali Pillai (Minister of State for Transport and Law), charity director David Hoe, and former Hougang representative Lee Hong Chuang.
