A New Strategy to Win Back Sengkang
In a bold move to reclaim one of Singapore’s key constituencies, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has officially announced its team to contest the Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the upcoming General Elections. This announcement comes as the party seeks to overturn the results from the 2020 elections, where they faced a surprising loss to the Workers’ Party.
Meet the Candidates Leading the Charge
At the forefront of this campaign is Lam Pin Min, a seasoned politician and former senior minister of state, who is ready to lead the charge at the PAP's Sengkang West branch. Alongside him are three fresh faces: Elmie Nekmat, a National University of Singapore lecturer; Theodora Lai, a partner at a venture capital firm; and Bernadette Giam, a dynamic company director. With an average age of 43 and equal gender representation, this diverse team is excited to bring a wealth of professional experience to Sengkang.
Dr. Lam's Commitment to Sengkang Residents
Dr. Lam, known for his work at Eagle Eye Centre, expressed a steadfast commitment to the residents, stating, A vote for our team signifies not only experienced leadership but also a passionate resolve to push Sengkang’s progress forward. Having previously competed in the Sengkang GRC, he aims to reconnect with voters after a narrow defeat in 2020, where the PAP garnered 47.88% of the votes.
Introducing Fresh Talent into the Politics
Each of the newcomers brings a unique perspective. Associate Professor Elmie Nekmat has been involved with the PAP since 2016, serving on several boards and councils, including the Singapore Sports Council and the Media Literacy Council. Theodora Lai, a long-time activist, notably co-founded a venture capital firm and has a keen interest in female empowerment through her leadership roles in various organizations. Meanwhile, Bernadette Giam comes to the table from the vibrant food and beverage sector, ready to make her mark in local governance.
The Landscape of Sengkang GRC
Sengkang GRC has a youthful demographic and is known for its rapidly evolving community. Formed just before the 2020 elections, it amalgamates areas from previous constituencies and has quickly become a focal point for both political parties. Amid plans for new community amenities, including parks and gardens, the question remains: Can PAP’s new lineup resonate with Singaporeans and reclaim the voters’ trust?
What to Expect?
With elections looming, expectations are high. The PAP is hoping their commitment to community needs, along with fresh talent and experience, will sway the electorate in their favor. As the campaign heats up, Sengkang residents will be watching closely to see if this diverse and energized team can reverse the electoral tides.

As the clock ticks down to the General Election deadline of November 23, all eyes will be on Sengkang GRC. Will the PAP successfully win back the constituency? Only time will tell, but the coming weeks promise to be eventful!
