PLD Space Aims for the Stars

In an ambitious move to emerge as a key player in the space industry, Spanish start-up PLD Space is setting its sights on not just launching satellites but eventually transporting humans into the cosmos. Known for successfully executing Europe’s first fully private rocket launch last year, PLD Space is ready to take on giants like Elon Musk's SpaceX.

A Slice of the Trillion-Dollar Space Economy

As the global race to deploy thousands of internet-beaming satellites heats up, analysts predict the establishment of a trillion-dollar space economy by 2030. PLD Space plans to seize a slice of this lucrative market with its innovative technology and strategic partnerships.

Commercial Launch Plans

During a recent event titled 'Beyond,' Executive President Ezequiel Sanchez revealed that the company’s commercial activities will kick off with the launch of small orbital satellites using a new rocket, slated for after 2026. Following this, the company intends to diversify its offerings with a family of heavier launchers over the next decade.

Commitment to Human Transportation

'Our goal is to launch any type of cargo that the market may require, including the transportation of humans,' said Sanchez, showcasing the firm’s commitment to expanding its capabilities.

Development of Miura-5

After the successful suborbital flight of the Miura-1 rocket—which is named after a famous breed of bulls known for their strength and agility—PLD is channeling its efforts into the development of the Miura-5 full orbital launcher. Initial test launches are set to take place in 2025 and 2026 from French Guiana.

Innovative Flight Configuration

Sanchez added that the existing flight configuration for Miura-5 will facilitate tests aimed at advancing technologies for future launchers, showcasing the potential for cutting-edge innovations at the company.

Business Growth and Funding

Founded in 2011 and located in Elche, a city recognized for Spain's footwear industry, PLD Space aims to finalize contracts for Miura-5 launches, already attracting significant interest that translates to deals worth approximately 600 million euros ($657.96 million).
