PM Wong Set to Strengthen Ties at ASEAN Summits in Laos Starting October 9!

VIENTIANE: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is gearing up for an important visit to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, from October 9 to 12. This trip marks his debut at the ASEAN summits and related discussions since taking office in May, presenting a crucial opportunity for him to engage with Southeast Asian leaders and propel Singapore's influence in regional diplomacy.

During the summits, which include the 44th and 45th ASEAN gatherings, leaders will deliberate on enhancing community-building efforts and seizing opportunities in burgeoning sectors like the digital economy and the green economy. According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), these discussions aim to solidify ASEAN's role in fostering an open, inclusive, and stable regional framework amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.

With Laos holding the chairmanship, this year's theme—'Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience'—implies a strong focus on boosting unity within ASEAN to navigate economic uncertainties effectively. Notably, PM Wong and his counterparts will also strategize on expanding ASEAN engagement in the upcoming 27th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the 19th East Asia Summit, and dialogues with global leaders from nations including Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, South Korea, the United Nations, and the United States.

This year’s ASEAN-Japan Summit, under Singapore's coordination for a three-year term, is another highlight, marking a significant step in regional cooperation.

In addition to the summit activities, PM Wong will have a significant bilateral meeting with Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on the last day of his visit, where they are expected to discuss deepening cooperation between Singapore and Laos—significantly emphasized as both nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this December.

Moreover, the Singapore delegation will call on Laos' President Thongloun Sisoulith, strengthening high-level ties further. Notably, PM Wong last visited Vientiane just a few months earlier, in April, while attending the ASEAN Finance Ministers’ Meeting.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by his wife, Ms. Loo Tze Lui, and Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. As PM Wong sets off for Laos, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong will serve as Acting Prime Minister of Singapore, ensuring continuity in governance during this significant international engagement.

Stay tuned, as this visit not only symbolizes international cooperation but also paves the way for future developments that could reshape the region’s economic landscape!
