In a shocking revelation, recent data has identified Psy's highly anticipated Summer Swag concert as the prime target for illegal ticket scalpers in South Korea this year. The news is stirring the music community, as concertgoers face rising frustrations over ticket availability and inflated prices.

On October 6 KST, Rep. Kang Yoo Jung from the Democratic Party, who is actively involved in the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, unveiled alarming statistics indicating that from November 2023 to the end of July 2024, around 3,400 reports of online ticket scalping have been recorded. Out of these, a staggering 75.2%—or 2,556 cases—were specifically related to music concerts, marking it as the most affected category.

The report detailed that ticket scalping activities primarily occurred on second-hand platforms, with approximately 80% of the incidents (2,721 reports) traced back to resale platforms like Danggeun Market and Joonggo Nara. Additionally, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram were also implicated, accounting for 626 reports.

During the same period, only 114 reports of legitimate scalping cases were validated, prompting the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) to take action on 109 incidents. This included ticket cancellations, identity verifications, and suspending accounts suspected of engaging in scalping. Alarmingly, 44 of the tickets scrutinized were confirmed as falsified, featuring fake booking details or incorrect seat numbers.

Psy's Summer Swag concert amassed the highest number of scalping reports among various performances, with 15 incidents documented. Other notable events experiencing significant scalping included Na Hoon A’s final concert in 2024 and Younha’s 20th Anniversary Concert. In total, tickets for 34 different shows were found to be involved in scalping activities.

In light of these findings, Rep. Kang has called for an urgent reassessment of penalties associated with illegal ticket sales. She emphasized that the current regulations infringe upon citizens' cultural rights, urging for more robust technical and logistical measures to combat ticket scalping. Kang's advocates for stricter enforcement highlight the need for the repercussions of ticket scalping activities to outweigh the financial benefits to deter future occurrences.

As Psy prepares for his Summer Swag concert, fans are left wondering how they can securely obtain tickets and enjoy the live performances they love without falling victim to scalpers. Will the authorities step up their game to protect concertgoers? Stay tuned!
