SINGAPORE – A man has been charged with grievous bodily harm following a shocking cycling incident that injured a female jogger at East Coast Park.
The collision occurred due to what witnesses describe as reckless cycling.
Incident Details
On December 27, Edmund Kwek Jun Wei, 34, was formally charged for his actions that took place on October 22.
According to the charge sheets, the incident occurred between 6:20 AM and 6:40 AM when Kwek collided with jogger Ms. Tan Jo-Ann.
The impact resulted in Ms. Tan sustaining a serious head fracture, alongside a laceration on her right elbow.
Emergency Response
Emergency services were alerted to the scene shortly after the incident, at approximately 10:55 AM, and Ms. Tan was transported to a nearby hospital while conscious.
Legal Consequences
Kwek's court appearance is scheduled for January 23, and if found guilty, he faces severe penalties: up to four years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or potentially both.
Cycling Safety Concerns
This incident is part of a troubling trend regarding cycling safety in Singapore.
Just a few months earlier, six young cyclists aged between 17 and 20 were charged for dangerous riding after recording themselves performing stunts on busy roads, dangerously swerving between lanes.
Additionally, a tragic case in September highlighted the dire consequences of negligence in cycling.
A woman was sentenced to four weeks in jail after her faulty bicycle brakes led to a collision with a pedestrian, resulting in the pedestrian's death from a head injury.
Reports indicated that the cyclist had been aware of her bicycle's issues for months prior to the accident, yet chose not to address them.
Call for Safety Awareness
As cycling continues to grow in popularity and more people take to the roads and parks for exercise, the need for increased awareness and adherence to safety regulations has never been more critical.
Cyclists and pedestrians alike must prioritize safety to prevent such incidents in the future.
