The world of Malaysian music mourns the loss of its celebrated composer, Ahmad Nawab, who passed away at his home in Gombak, Malaysia, on Sunday, November 24. He was 92 years old.

Known originally as Ahmad Khan Nawab Khan, Ahmad had an illustrious career that spanned nearly eight decades, cementing his legacy as a central figure in the Malaysian music scene. He collaborated with legendary artists such as P Ramlee, Sudirman, and Saloma, crafting melodies that not only resonated with many but also defined the sound of a generation. His impressive repertoire includes more than 2,000 songs, with contributions to esteemed regional artists like Hetty Koes Endang and Broery Marantika.

Among his most notable creations is the iconic "Malaysia Truly Asia," a song performed by Khadijah Ibrahim that has played a pivotal role in promoting Malaysia as a vibrant tourist destination. The tune, steeped in the rich cultural heritage of the nation, has become synonymous with Malaysia's identity on the global stage.

In reflecting on Ahmad’s passing, his granddaughter Teh Suraya Nasir Khan shared with the Malaysian news agency Bernama that he had been unwell, suffering from a fever in the days leading up to his death. “He wasn’t suffering from any major illnesses, but thankfully he passed away peacefully,” she conveyed.

He expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, “The country has lost a figure and artistic gem whose contribution was so significant in enriching the country's music landscape. Ahmad Nawab was laid to rest on Monday morning, surrounded by over 200 mourners who came to pay their last respects to a true artistic pioneer.
