SINGAPORE – Amid the joyous Hari Raya festivities, the spirit of compassion for those affected by the Gaza conflict and the recent earthquake in Myanmar remains strong in Singapore, as highlighted by Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Social and Family Development.

Addressing the media on March 31, Mr. Masagos revealed that a heartfelt campaign led by the local charity Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation has successfully raised over $1 million for humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza, providing essential food, medical supplies, and goods to the beleaguered population. His words resonate deeply: "While we celebrate, we must not forget those suffering from calamities and conflicts," emphasizing the importance of generosity in difficult times.

Rescue Efforts in Myanmar

Reflecting on the resilience of the community, Mr. Masagos expressed gratitude towards the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) contingent that recently departed for Myanmar to assist in rescue operations following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay on March 28. Tragically, more than 1,700 lives have been lost, with another 3,400 people injured, highlighting the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis.

The SCDF's Operation Lionheart, which includes 80 personnel—many of whom are Muslim officers—represents a united front dedicated to helping our neighbors in crisis. “Their sacrifices this Hari Raya, leaving their families behind to assist those in dire need, deserve our utmost appreciation," stated Mr. Masagos.

Global Solidarity During Natural Disasters

In a broader context, the earthquake was felt across borders, affecting regions as far as Thailand, Vietnam, and even China, with powerful aftershocks compounding the devastation. This unprecedented natural disaster calls for global solidarity and support.

Honoring Inclusivity in the Community

As Muslim communities wrapped up the fasting month of Ramadan, Mr. Masagos commended the role of mosque volunteers who contributed to a harmonious and respectful worship environment. "We celebrate our unity and strength during this festive period while honoring the different cultures that coexist within Singapore."

Acts of Kindness during Celebrations

At Masjid Muhajirin in Braddell Road, the conclusion of Ramadan was marked by the heartfelt gesture of sharing around 1,200 homemade butter cakes, with MP Saktiandi Supaat and volunteers actively participating in the distribution. The act fostered a strong sense of community, illustrating how simple acts of kindness amplify the joy of the Hari Raya celebrations.

Volunteer Ms. Cindy Chia expressed her delight in shifting from store-bought cookies to freshly baked cakes this year, describing it as a more personal touch: "Seeing the smiles on people's faces when receiving a cake was truly rewarding." She actively supports initiatives aimed at integrating the Malay community into the broader fabric of Singapore society.
