Singapore's political landscape is buzzing as the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) launches its manifesto ahead of the May 3 elections. The party's bold proposals, unveiled on April 20, promise to tackle some of the nation’s biggest issues.

Key Proposals: Affordable Housing and Free Healthcare

Among the standout proposals is the introduction of new Housing Board (HDB) flats priced between just $90,000 and $270,000. This revolutionary pricing model aims to make homeownership accessible to all Singaporeans.

In an ambitious effort to alleviate the burden on families, the SDP also suggests that maternal and pediatric care should largely be funded by the government, making these essential services free. This initiative is seen as a means to combat Singapore’s declining birth rates.

Education Reform: Say Goodbye to PSLE!

Perhaps one of its most radical proposals is the abolishment of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). Instead, the SDP proposes interest-free student loans for undergraduates and the nationalization of preschool education to ensure all children receive affordable early education.

Funding the Vision: Surplus Spending and Economic Strategies

Addressing concerns about funding these transformative policies, SDP Chairman Professor Paul Tambyah pointed to an estimated budget surplus of $6.8 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. He asserted that even with a planned reduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 9% to 7%, the nation could still maintain a healthy surplus.

The proposed educational reforms are estimated to cost about $1.5 billion, which falls comfortably within the expected budget surplus.

Strengthening the Economy

In light of global economic uncertainties, including US tariffs, the SDP aims to bolster Singapore’s domestic economy. With local consumption currently at just 40% of GDP—one of the lowest in high-income nations—Professor Tambyah advocates for initiatives to support small and medium-sized enterprises as a strategy to enhance consumption.

A Promising Future: Who’s Running?

As the opposition prepares for the polls, Professor Tambyah plans to contest in Bukit Panjang SMC, aiming to improve on his previous 46.27% vote share in 2020. SDP Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan will campaign in the newly created Sembawang West SMC.

The stakes are high as their slate faces off against a People’s Action Party (PAP) team led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. With big ideas and a commitment to accountability, the SDP is poised to challenge the status quo in Singapore’s politics.

The Call to Action

The SDP’s campaign slogan, "Thrive, Not Just Survive," encapsulates its vision for a Singapore where every citizen can flourish. As they gear up for battle in the upcoming election, the question remains: will Singaporeans embrace these bold changes?
