SBS Transit Launches Service 298X
In a groundbreaking announcement on Monday (November 18), SBS Transit revealed that starting December 9, residents of Tampines North and Tampines West will benefit from a brand-new express feeder service, Service 298X. This initiative aims to significantly reduce commuting times to the bustling Tampines town center and transport hub.
Operational Details
The express service will operate on weekdays during peak hours, excluding public holidays, offering speedier connections by servicing just 15 selected bus stops along its route. SBS Transit stated, "Service 298X will operate similarly to its parent service, Service 298, but will take a more direct route to minimize travel time."
Background on the Initiative
This express feeder service emerges from Singapore’s Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme (BCEP), a strategic initiative launched in July by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The BCEP, boasting a budget of S$900 million allocated from 2024 to 2032, is designed to revitalize the country’s bus services by introducing new buses, enhancing infrastructure, and ensuring new routes are promptly implemented to accommodate evolving travel demands.
Advantages of Express Feeders
The concept of express feeders is a game-changer for residents who reside further from major transport hubs. These express services minimize the number of intermediate stops compared to regular feeder buses, thus ensuring a quicker and more efficient journey. For instance, Service 298X will exclusively stop at selected points along Tampines Ave 4 and Tampines Ctrl 1—specifically at Bus Stops 76559, 76551, 76149, and 76141.
Community Reaction
Residents have expressed relief and excitement over the introduction of Service 298X. One Reddit user noted the significant detours taken by the regular Service 298 through older estates, stating, "The express feeder will make a huge difference. We’ve been advocating for faster options for ages!" However, they also highlighted that despite the need for faster services, the bus must still navigate through older estates, as many commuters disembark at the Tampines Interchange.
Looking Ahead
The excitement doesn't stop there! This innovative express feeder service not only enhances connectivity but is also part of a wider effort by the Singapore government to improve public transport options, which will play a crucial role in easing congestion and promoting a greener, more efficient city. Keep an eye out for more updates as Singapore takes significant steps toward a smarter commuting future!
