To tackle these challenges, researchers are exploring the next generation of display technology: 3D volumetric displays. This method aims to represent three-dimensional images in real space, utilizing upconversion nanoparticles that can absorb infrared light and emit vibrant visible light.
Color Purity Achieved with Innovative Design
A major hurdle has been the development of nanoparticles that can emit all three primary colors—red, green, and blue—from a single entity. Previous materials either limited themselves to one color or offered low brightness and narrow color ranges.
However, the KIST team's innovative design ingeniously controls the core and shell compositions of the nanoparticles, allowing for R/G/B luminescence from one particle. By applying three different near-infrared wavelengths, they managed to achieve vibrant color emissions—green from the core, red from the inner shell, and blue from the outer shell.
