SDA Zeroes In on Key Districts Ahead of Singapore General Elections

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) has announced a strategic shift, focusing their campaign resources on the Pasir Ris-Changi GRC as they prepare for the upcoming general elections. However, a decision regarding their participation in Punggol GRC is still pending and expected next week.

During a walkabout at Lengkok Mariam—an area now included in the new boundaries of Pasir Ris-Changi—SDA chairman Desmond Lim and 11 party members engaged with local residents, discussing recent boundary changes and listening to community concerns.

New Boundaries, New Opportunities

As Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC transforms into Pasir Ris-Changi, the constituency now boasts a voter base of 100,639, making it a significant area for any opposition party. SDA plans to consolidate its efforts here, having previously contested this region since 2006 without success.

In response to queries about Punggol GRC, Mr. Lim expressed that the party is still assessing their options, emphasizing the need to avoid splitting votes in three-cornered fights that could undermine voter interests.

Exciting Developments on the Horizon

In an intriguing development, Mr. Lim hinted at the addition of a new party joining the SDA coalition, following the approval of its application last Tuesday. While details remain under wraps until closer to Nomination Day, it seems this new collaboration could bring fresh energy and perspectives to the SDA's electoral strategy.

Currently, the SDA coalition includes the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) and the Singapore Justice Party (SJP). Mr. Lim mentioned there are several promising candidates within the party who are eager to represent the SDA.

Reflecting on Past Elections

In the previous GE2020, a notable lineup from the SDA, including Mr. Lim and other key figures, finished second in Pasir Ris-Punggol, securing 23.67% of the votes against the incumbent People's Action Party (PAP). As the party gears up for the upcoming election, preparations are intensifying.

While Mr. Lim and other notable candidates were absent from the latest walkabout, community engagement remains a priority, showcasing the SDA's commitment to connecting with voters in these critical districts.
