SFA Issues Urgent Recall of Chinese Melon Seed Product Over Dangerous Sweeteners

SINGAPORE – In a significant health alert, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has launched a recall of a popular melon seed product imported from China, identified as Ji Xiang Special Grade Black Melon Seed. The recall was announced on October 8, 2023, in response to alarming findings of high levels of artificial sweeteners in the product.

This specific batch, weighing 1kg and packed on August 23, 2024, has been flagged due to excessive amounts of cyclamate and saccharin—two artificial sweeteners that surpass the safe limits established by Singapore’s stringent food regulations.

Cyclamate, also referred to as cyclamic acid, is commonly used in various food items like soft drinks and canned fruits but is explicitly not permitted in nut and seed products due to potential health risks. Though the SFA has indicated that there is no immediate health danger from consuming products bearing these sweeteners, they advise against prolonged use, which could pose health concerns over time.

The importer, Guangdong Import & Export, has been instructed to take back the affected products immediately. In a proactive response, the SFA is also ramping up the sampling and testing of nuts and seeds across Singapore to ensure safety and compliance with food standards.

“Any consumers who have ingested this melon seed product and are experiencing health concerns are strongly advised to consult a medical professional,” the agency urged. Additionally, those affected should contact the retailer from which the product was purchased for further assistance.

This incident serves as a critical reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about food safety and the ingredients contained in their snacks, especially imported products. Stay tuned as the SFA continues its investigation and enforcement actions to protect public health.
