Shocking Assault at Meridian Secondary School Leaves Student with Ruptured Eardrum

In a harrowing incident that highlights the urgent need for addressing bullying in schools, a secondary one pupil from Meridian Secondary School has suffered a ruptured eardrum after being assaulted by her peers. The disturbing episode unfolded during lunchtime on October 3, near the school at Block 541, Pasir Ris Street 51.

According to reports, the victim was lured to a void deck by an older female student who claimed she wanted to talk. However, upon her arrival, she was confronted by a gang of six – comprising four boys and two girls. Under the boys' instigation, the girls launched a vicious attack on the pupil, slapping and beating her for nearly 20 minutes. This brutal assault came to an end only when a concerned passerby alerted the police, highlighting the alarming prevalence of such incidents going unnoticed by adults.

The victim’s father, Zhou Yueliang, a local taxi driver, recounted the traumatic experience after he was informed of the assault. He described the sight of his daughter with visible bruises around her eyes and neck, while she complained of severe pain in her right ear. Medical personnel from Singapore Civil Defence Force rushed her to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where she was treated and cleared for discharge on the same day.

The situation took a turn for the worse the following morning when an unknown liquid began to flow from the girl’s right ear, leading her and her father to return to the hospital. An X-ray revealed the heartbreaking news – her right eardrum had ruptured. While her physical wounds have started to heal, the young student is still struggling with her hearing.

Determined to seek justice, Zhou plans to pursue legal action against the students involved once the police investigation concludes. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for a proactive approach to bullying in schools, as well as the enforcement of strict policies to protect vulnerable students.

In response to the tragedy, the Principal of Meridian Secondary School, Mohamed Razali B Abdul Hamed, confirmed that they are fully aware of the incident and have already lodged a police report. "The school has been closely monitoring the condition of the injured student and has initiated disciplinary measures against all students involved, including bystanders," he stated.

As the police continue their investigation into this alarming case, one question remains: How many more students must suffer before schools take a firmer stand against bullying? The community watches closely, eager for answers and hoping for meaningful action to prevent such incidents in the future.
