Violent Attack Details

In a startling incident that shook the community, a man identified as Basnayake Keith Spencer, 37, was involved in a violent attack on a priest at St. Joseph's Church in Singapore on November 9, 2024.

This case has taken a dramatic turn as Spencer has now been hit with additional charges related to weapon possession.

Charges Filed

On March 17, he was charged with three counts of possessing weapons on the day of the attack. Prior to this, he faced a single charge for voluntarily causing grievous hurt after allegedly using a knife to assault Reverend Christopher Lee, who was officiating communion at the time. The violence occurred shortly before 6:30 PM, shocking parishioners present during the sacred service.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses reported that Spencer wielded a 14.5cm penknife, a flip knife, and a fishing gaff—a pole with a sharp hook—while inside the church.

The attack left Father Lee with significant injuries, including an 8cm laceration on his tongue, a 3cm cut on his upper left lip, and a 4cm cut at the corner of his mouth.

Fortunately, brave congregation members disarmed Spencer before the police could arrive.

Aftermath and Community Impact

Disturbing video footage following the incident captured the moment Spencer was escorted from the church, visibly bloodied and restrained.

Authorities have clarified that they do not suspect the attack to be an act of terrorism, nor do they believe it was driven by religious motives.

Rev. Lee spent several days recovering in the hospital and was eventually discharged on November 15.

Recently, Spencer was brought back to the church by police for a reconstruction of the events that transpired that fateful evening.

As legal proceedings unfold, it’s worth noting that the implications for Spencer are severe. If convicted of voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon, he could face life imprisonment or a maximum of 15 years behind bars, along with fines and caning.

Meanwhile, each count of weapon possession carries the risk of up to three years in prison and caning as well.
