A collaborative team of scientists from top universities, including Rice, New Mexico, Utah, and Texas at Dallas, documented their stunning findings in the prestigious journal Nature. To uncover this phenomenon, they employed a 53,000-pound vibroseis truck, typically used for oil and gas exploration, to generate minute earthquakes and observe the resulting seismic waves.
Conducting their experiments at night, due to Yellowstone's popularity and size, the researchers deployed over 600 seismometers to capture data. The seismic waves reflected off the various layers beneath the Earth, revealing the magma cap’s surprisingly shallow depth.
Previously, there was significant uncertainty regarding the depth of Yellowstone’s magma system, with estimates ranging from three to eight kilometers. This new clarity allows researchers to better understand how today's magma conditions compare to those before past eruptions, providing vital insights into the supervolcano’s activity.
