Marina Square Takes Action Following Viral Safety Incident

SINGAPORE - A viral video showcasing a potentially dangerous situation has led Marina Square to take immediate action by removing a bollard from one of its escalators.

The video, shared by user Jay Sng on Facebook on November 27, depicted a floor plate lifting upon being pushed, exposing the moving steps of the escalator underneath.

In the clip, Sng can be heard expressing concern, stating, “Someone could fall in.” The alarming footage quickly caught the attention of social media users, sparking discussions around safety measures in public spaces.

Upon witnessing the incident, Sng promptly alerted security personnel, suggesting they shut down the escalator and barricade the area until further inspections could ascertain whether other escalators in the mall had similar vulnerabilities.

Following this, a commenter noted that a bollard near the mall's taxi stand was notably absent during her visit on November 29, indicating rapid response to the incident.

Building and Construction Authority Responds

In response to an inquiry from The Straits Times, a spokesperson from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) stated that Marina Square has been instructed to eliminate the magnetic bollards from all escalators within the mall.

The spokesperson explained that such bollards are inappropriate for escalators lacking securely fastened floor plates.

These mechanical fasteners, including screws, rivets, and bolts, are essential in countering any turning force that could arise if a bollard is accidentally pushed or pulled.

"BCA has reminded building owners to ensure that floor plates for escalators are securely fastened, especially when using magnetic bollards," the spokesperson added.

Marina Square's Commitment to Safety

Marina Square confirmed that it was alerted to the incident on November 28 and asserted that the installed bollards were initially compliant with established guidelines.

As safety concerns escalate following this incident, mall management is expected to undertake a comprehensive review of their safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

In light of this event, shoppers are advised to remain vigilant when using escalators and report any safety hazards immediately to staff.

Public safety remains a top priority, and this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations in all public facilities.
