SINGAPORE: A Troubling Incident

In a troubling incident that has raised serious safety concerns, a Grab driver has been suspended after a passenger shared a video showcasing reckless behavior behind the wheel. The video, which quickly gained attention on social media, highlights the dangers of distracted driving in urban settings.

The Incident

On December 5, the passenger, known as Mr. Thomas, posted the video in the Complaint Singapore Facebook group, detailing his alarming experience during a GrabCar Premium ride from Tanjong Rhu to Novena on November 21. The footage, recorded from the back seat, showcases the driver using his mobile phone multiple times throughout the journey, clearly disregarding both traffic laws and the safety of his passenger.

The Controversial Footage

In the controversial clip, Mr. Thomas captured moments where the driver was seen holding the steering wheel with one hand while actively texting with the other. Alarmingly, the driver even removed his right hand from the wheel to dedicate both hands to his phone on at least two occasions, averting his gaze from the road during this time. “Irresponsible Grab driver, continuously texting with both hands!” exclaimed Mr. Thomas in his post, expressing his fears for his safety.

Passenger's Frustration

Despite initially voicing his concerns directly to Grab, Thomas felt dismissed, stating that the company sent him a “copy-paste generic pacifying letter” when he sought further clarification. This lack of proper response led him to conclude that “Grab doesn’t care” about passenger safety.

Official Response from Grab

The incident has prompted an official response from Grab Singapore, who not only suspended the driver but also reached out to Mr. Thomas to apologize for the distressing experience. A company spokesperson confirmed that a refund for the booking was issued, emphasizing that driver-partners are reminded that using a phone – even simply holding it – is strictly prohibited under the Road Traffic Act in Singapore.

Commitment to Safety

Grab reiterated its commitment to passenger safety, asserting that drivers found to violate the company’s code of conduct or local traffic laws face potential permanent bans from the platform. The statement urges all drivers to prioritize safety above all else, recognizing that incidents like this can severely undermine public trust and safety in ride-hailing services.

Future of Ride-Hailing Safety

As the conversation about distracted driving continues, many are questioning the enforcement of regulations and the measures companies are taking to ensure the safety of passengers. Will this incident prompt a shift in policies at Grab and other ride-hailing services? One can only hope it sparks the change needed to protect passengers and maintain safer roads in Singapore.
