In a remarkable initiative that has captured public attention, Happy Mart @ Stirling is redefining the concept of community support in one of Singapore's first HDB blocks. Located at Block 49 Stirling Road, this unique minimart operates on just two days a week—Wednesday and Sunday—from 10 am to 2 pm, creating an air of exclusivity and anticipation among its eligible visitors.

What Makes Happy Mart Special?

What makes this minimart truly special? It offers low-income families the opportunity to shop completely free of charge! Each eligible family receives 12 credits per month, allowing them to select from a diverse array of goods. Shoppers can choose from fresh produce like fruits, vegetables, and eggs, as well as household essentials such as toilet paper, washing detergent, and even adult diapers. Each item is priced at just one credit, making it easier for families to manage their grocery expenses.

Inauguration and Purpose

Happy Mart was inaugurated on January 4th by none other than Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, along with fellow MP Eric Chua. This groundbreaking community mart is the first of its kind established by the charity Hao Ren Hao Shi, which translates to 'good people, good deeds.' The founders are on a mission to not just provide food but also to bring joy to families, ensuring that even birthdays are celebrated with a cake or roast chicken, regardless of one’s living situation.

Impact and Expansion Plans

Currently, 160 residents benefit from the initiative, but plans are in place to expand its reach to serve between 300 and 500 families over time. The charity's founder, Anson Ng, intends to create a ripple effect of goodwill, as his organization, which has been providing free groceries since 2017, assists around 1,600 families monthly through mobile grocery trucks and other programs.

One shopper, 77-year-old Madam Krishnavainy Kannoo Sutheyvall, shared her gratitude, explaining how the initiative helps her enjoy a variety of items, from cakes to everyday necessities. Another patron, Mr. Yeo Cheng Ghee, a 76-year-old retired welder, expressed how the program significantly eases his family’s financial strain.
