SINGAPORE - The police are currently investigating a series of alarming motorcycle accidents involving cars that have gone viral on social media, causing widespread concern among the public.

In each of the three separate incidents reported, a motorcyclist was hospitalized, and car drivers involved are cooperating with the authorities as investigations progress.

The most recent incident took place on April 5 at around 4 p.m. along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) en route to the Woodlands Checkpoint. A gripping video shared on the Facebook page SG Road Vigilante captures chaotic scenes on the highway where cars are gridlocked in the far-left and far-right lanes. A white car, seemingly frustrated by the traffic, suddenly veers from the right lane to the left lane. In an unfortunate turn of events, it collides with a motorcyclist who was navigating through the middle lane. Emergency responders promptly transported the 45-year-old male motorcyclist to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, while the 38-year-old male driver is now providing assistance to the police with their inquiries.

Earlier that day, another incident unfolded on the Central Expressway (CTE). Footage reveals a car, traveling in the leftmost lane of the four-lane road, recklessly switching lanes, resulting in a collision with a motorcyclist positioned in the second lane from the right. The impact caused the biker to crash into the next lane. The 35-year-old motorcyclist was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, conscious and alert. Meanwhile, the 60-year-old car driver is also cooperating with police investigations.

On April 3, another shocking incident occurred when an SUV executed a U-turn at the intersection of Hill Street and Stamford Road around 6 p.m. In a video of the event, a motorcyclist can be seen attempting to cross the junction but loses control and falls while trying to avoid the vehicle. Tragically, the car does not stop following the collision, leading to a hit-and-run scenario. The 28-year-old male motorcyclist was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition. The driver responsible, aged 28 as well, is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

These incidents bring to light a worrying trend as recent statistics from the Traffic Police reveal that over half of all traffic accidents in the first half of 2024 involved motorcyclists and their passengers. In total, there were a staggering 1,902 accidents involving motorcyclists, highlighting a notable increase from 1,751 accidents in the same period in 2022.

As residents express their shock and concern over the rising number of motorcycle-related accidents, many are questioning the safety protocols on the roads and calling for more stringent regulations to protect vulnerable motorcyclists from reckless driving behaviors. Authorities are urged to take immediate steps to address this escalating issue to ensure safer roadways for all users.
