In a startling trend, ambulances in London are dispatched daily to treat individuals falling ill from chemsex—a practice traditionally linked to gay and bisexual men—that's now gaining traction among heterosexual couples.
Chemsex involves using powerful drugs like crystal meth and GHB to amplify and extend sexual experiences. While it may heighten pleasure, the dark side includes severe risks such as psychosis, overdose, and respiratory distress.
Reports from the London Ambulance Service indicate they're receiving at least one call each day related to these alarming incidents, predominantly in the Vauxhall area of South London.
Ignacio Labayen de Inza, the chief executive of the charity Controlling Chemsex, expressed concern over this trend: "The spread into the straight community is worrying. Unlike the LGBTQ+ community, which is more aware of the associated hazards, many in the straight community remain oblivious to the risks involved."
As this phenomenon grows, the urgent need for awareness and education about the dangers of chemsex becomes ever more crucial.
