PETALING JAYA - In a startling development, a sinkhole measuring an estimated 5 meters in width and 1 meter in depth has unexpectedly opened up near the entrance of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) prestigious Bunga Raya Complex, the Works Ministry of Malaysia announced.

According to a statement released on September 25, the sinkhole has formed in the area that serves as the entrance and exit for VIP guests and dignitaries arriving or departing from KLIA. While officials confirmed that the road remains accessible to all vehicles, they have implemented a traffic management plan to ensure safety and disruption is minimized in the vicinity of the sinkhole.

Investigation is already underway as Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) looks into a leaking sewage pipe, which is suspected to be a contributing factor to this troubling occurrence. The Works Ministry emphasized that authorities are taking proactive steps, including ongoing site monitoring and evaluations to ascertain the stability of the ground.

A comprehensive report from MAHB detailing the investigation’s findings is expected to be released once assessments are finalized.

This incident raises serious concerns, particularly as it is not the first sinkhole to disrupt normalcy in Kuala Lumpur.

Just last month, two sinkholes were reported within a bustling tourist shopping area, causing alarm among locals and business owners alike regarding potential risks to ground safety. The first notable incident occurred on August 23, when a sudden pavement collapse along Jalan Masjid India tragically swallowed a 48-year-old tourist from India, Ms. Vijayalaksmi. Despite extensive nine-day rescue efforts, she remains unaccounted for, intensifying worries about public safety across the city.
