A recent study has unveiled alarming findings: a staggering 80% of UK employees believe that standing for extended periods at work is wreaking havoc on their health. This eye-opening research surveyed 1,000 adults who spend at least four hours on their feet daily, and the results highlight a worrisome trend in workplace wellness.
Participants reported common complaints of lower back pain, foot discomfort, and knee issues, which have become increasingly prevalent among those with standing-heavy jobs. Shockingly, more than one-third of respondents indicated that their mental health was negatively impacted due to the stress induced by physical discomfort. Alarmingly, 50% of these individuals struggled with daily tasks, finding it difficult to get out of bed due to ongoing pain.
COBA, a workplace safety organization that commissioned the study, stressed the urgency of these findings. A spokesperson stated, “Employers must recognize that prolonged standing can pose a serious health risk. Not only does it diminish the workers’ health, but it also hampers productivity and raises absenteeism rates.”
The survey revealed that 43% of workers coping with standing-related discomfort frequently turn to over-the-counter pain relief, whereas 26% sought medical assistance from their general practitioners. Nearly half of the respondents reported taking sick leave, averaging around 2.5 days in the past year due to these health challenges.
Financially, 67% of participants noted that their health problems led to monetary strain, resulting in an average outlay of £148 for treatments or lost wages over the last twelve months. Despite these hardships, only 43% of those surveyed reported receiving any support from their employers to address these escalating issues.
In response to the distressing data, COBA has teamed up with chartered physiotherapist Connor Ruffinato to launch an online resource center. This platform offers vital information, practical tips, and guidance for both employers and employees on how to mitigate the health risks associated with excessive standing.
Connor Ruffinato emphasized the importance of movement: “Remaining stationary, whether sitting or standing, restricts body movement and can lead to conditions such as tendinopathy or joint pain. Standing for long hours requires significant muscular effort and can lead to stiff joints, particularly in those already prone to such issues.”
He recommended incorporating simple exercises into the workday. “If you're stuck at your workstation, try calf raises or squats to relieve muscle tension, loosen joints, and improve blood circulation. However, if you’re consistently experiencing pain, it’s critical to consult a healthcare professional.”
With an increasing number of employees facing the risks associated with prolonged standing, the need for awareness and proactive management in the workplace has never been more vital. Are our offices becoming detrimental to our health? It's time for employers to take action before it’s too late!
