SHOCKING Theft in Johor Bahru: Singaporean Man Loses Over $1,000 to Crafty Pickpocket!
In a disheartening incident that has sent shockwaves through the Singaporean community, a 72-year-old man, known only as Mr. Chen, found himself a victim of pickpocketing while on a bus ride in Johor Bahru (JB). Despite his best efforts to stay alert and avoid such scenarios, he fell prey to a cunning thief.
The incident took place around 1 PM last Thursday when Mr. Chen and his friend were traveling from KSL City to City Square mall. Seated at the back of the bus next to a suspicious-looking man in his 50s or 60s, Mr. Chen was oblivious to the danger lurking right next to him.
While reflecting on the experience, Mr. Chen noted that the man appeared to be shifting his body in a strange manner, but he dismissed it as inconsequential. To his shock, the thief slipped away before they reached their destination, leaving Mr. Chen unaware of the loss he had just incurred.
It wasn’t until around 6 PM, when Mr. Chen looked to tally up his expenses, that he discovered his wallet was missing $450 in cash. More alarmingly, a credit card had been stolen and used for unauthorized transactions totaling about $800—adding up to an astonishing loss of over $1,000.
Interestingly, the thief left behind RM200 (S$60) in cash in the wallet, leading Mr. Chen to suspect that he may have intentionally done so to mislead him about the theft. "I believe he thought I would panic and block my card if my wallet went completely missing," he speculated.
Despite taking precautions—wearing pants with deep pockets and regularly checking his belongings—Mr. Chen expressed his confusion, admitting that he could not fathom how the thief managed to pilfer his cash without detection.
Upon contacting his bank, Mr. Chen learned that the process of disputing the fraudulent charges could take two to three months, leaving uncertainty about whether he would be reimbursed. Additionally, Mr. Chen hesitated to file a police report in Malaysia, fearing the process would be overly complex.
In an effort to warn others, Mr. Chen hopes that sharing his experience will encourage Singaporeans traveling to JB to remain vigilant against such crafty thieves. His ordeal serves as a reminder to beware of one’s surroundings, especially when using public transportation.
As local authorities address the rise in pickpocket incidents, travelers are advised to take extra precautions to protect their belongings in high-footfall areas. It’s a stark reminder that crime can strike anywhere—so stay alert!
