A Horrific Tale of Abuse and Neglect

In a shocking turn of events, a Singapore police officer has been found guilty for his horrifying role in the fatal abuse of a young Myanmar maid. Staff Sergeant Kevin Chelvam, 36, is facing the consequences for not only standing by as his ex-wife and mother-in-law systematically starved and assaulted 24-year-old Piang Ngaih Don but also attempting to obstruct justice.

A Series of Inhumane Treatments

Court proceedings revealed the brutal conditions Ms. Piang endured. For more than a month before her tragic death on July 26, 2016, she was reportedly given nothing but slices of bread soaked in water, a diet far from sufficient to keep her alive. Chelvam was accused of lifting her by her hair and standing idly by as the abuse unfolded.

The Evidence of a Systematic Cover-Up

District Judge Teoh Ai Lin outlined Chelvam's failure to act. She noted that he witnessed abhorrent acts, such as his mother-in-law dragging Ms. Piang like a "rag doll," yet did nothing to protect her. The judge stated that even though Ms. Piang was able to move, any reasonable person would have recognized that her life was at risk due to severe malnutrition over the weeks leading to her death.

The Gruesome Conditions of Employment

Ms. Piang was hired in May 2015 under dire terms. Chelvam’s then-wife had barred her from having a mobile phone or days off, which tragically enabled the escalating abuse. Reports reveal that the maid was forced to perform chores under the constant surveillance of her tormentors, sometimes hospitalized during moments of extreme cruelty.

CCTV Footage Reveals a Disturbing Reality

The prosecution highlighted the chilling footage captured by CCTV cameras installed in the flat. The recordings revealed multiple incidents of abuse occurring right in front of Chelvam, who failed to intervene. Disturbingly, after Ms. Piang’s death, Chelvam attempted to erase incriminating evidence by dismantling the CCTV recorder and lying about its whereabouts.

A Justice Delayed but Not Denied

Currently suspended from his duties, Chelvam has been convicted on several charges including abetting voluntary hurt and causing evidence to disappear. He awaits sentencing scheduled for July 17, where the severity of his actions will once again come to the forefront. Meanwhile, his ex-wife and mother-in-law are serving lengthy prison sentences for their direct involvement in this tragic case.
