SINGAPORE: In a significant move towards collaborative development, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met in Bangkok on Thursday, showcasing a commitment to tackle pressing global issues such as carbon credits and food security.
During a joint press conference, PM Wong emphasized the opportunity for both nations to leverage their strong connectivity to enhance cooperation in the burgeoning green economy. He highlighted Thailand's advancements in green energy production, mentioning initiatives in hydrogen and biofuels as pivotal components of their strategy. "We aim to establish an implementation agreement on carbon credits collaboration, which is a gateway to new business opportunities for our companies," Wong stated.
Food security was another critical topic discussed, with Wong recalling a prior conversation with Ms. Paetongtarn during the recent ASEAN summit in Laos. Given Singapore's reliance on food imports, enhancing food security remains a top priority, making this collaboration particularly vital.
Ms. Paetongtarn revealed Thailand’s eagerness to support Singapore's food security needs by increasing exports of premium rice and organic eggs, noting the shared responsibility of both nations in ensuring sustainable food supply chains.
Additionally, Singapore is set to welcome Thai civil servants through scholarship programs at local universities, a move aimed at fostering ongoing educational exchanges and best practices within ASEAN. The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two countries marks a new chapter in their civil service relations.
The duo also celebrated significant advancements in digital finance, referencing the successful launch of PayNow and PromptPay—the world's first cross-border fast payment system—back in 2021. This innovative collaboration exemplifies the strong ties and leadership both countries hold in the digital economy, further supported by the introduction of Southeast Asia's first depository receipts linkage for trading on each other’s stock exchanges.
In addressing ASEAN’s potential as a key economic hub, PM Wong remarked on the region's diverse markets and youthful demographics, underscoring the urgent need to integrate economies for collective growth. He praised Thailand for its leadership role in the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, aimed at deepening digital connectivity across member states.
Moreover, discussions also touched upon the ambitious ASEAN Power Grid initiative, with Wong stressing the importance of phase two of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, aiming to bolster energy resilience in the region.
Wrapping up their discussions, Wong expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Ms. Paetongtarn, marking his visit as the first official one since her appointment. He reaffirmed the strength of the longstanding friendship between the two nations and anticipated a series of forthcoming high-level exchanges to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations.
Looking ahead, both leaders are committed to nurturing their bilateral relationships with a slate of upcoming visits, including one from Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn slated for January and another visit by Singapore’s president.
As the two countries gear up for future collaborations, the strengthening of bonds in food security, environmental sustainability, and economic integration potentially sets a precedent for regional cooperation in Southeast Asia.
Stay tuned as Singapore and Thailand embark on this promising journey—it could redefine how nations collaborate on some of the most pressing issues of our time!
