Singapore Braces for Global Uncertainty Amid New Geopolitical Tensions, Says PM Wong

Vientiane, Laos: Singaporeans must prepare for a challenging period in global development as the world enters a "turbulent" phase marked by what some leaders are calling a "new Cold War," declared Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Saturday, October 12. During the final day of his visit to Laos, Wong emphasized the necessity for citizens to adopt a resilient mindset in light of rising global tensions.

Wong's comments follow recent discussions among world leaders at the ASEAN summit, where concerns were raised about escalating geopolitical conflicts and the looming threat of climate change. "We are now experiencing a new phase of development following three decades of globalization, characterized by geopolitical rivalries," he explained.

He called for ASEAN member states to strengthen regional integration, promising that a united voice is crucial as nations navigate this uncertain landscape. As climate change continues to wreak havoc globally—evidenced by Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia and hurricanes in the United States—Wong urged Singapore to lead efforts for positive outcomes, fostering dialogue to resolve disputes peacefully.
