Tragic Attack Claims Over 20 Lives

SINGAPORE: In a strong denunciation, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Wednesday expressed its outrage over the horrifying terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of more than 20 individuals. The attack, occurring at a popular tourist spot on April 22, 2025, marks the region's deadliest assault on civilians in over two decades.

Gunmen armed with automatic weapons launched a ferocious ambush on visitors, killing 26 men and injuring 17 others. Among the deceased, all but one were Indian nationals.

Solidarity with India in the Fight Against Terrorism

In their statement, the MFA reiterated, "Singapore strongly condemns the terror attacks in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. We stand with India in the fight against terrorism." Thankfully, there have been no reports of Singaporeans being among the casualties.

Face of Terror: The Militant Group Behind the Attack

The responsible party, militants who identified themselves as members of the Kashmir Resistance, claimed the attack was aimed at targeting individuals they alleged were associated with Indian security agencies. A statement from the group added that they felt justified in acting against what they called 'outsiders,' referring to tourists who they believe undermine their cause.

Prime Minister Modi Takes Swift Action

In the wake of the attacks, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had been on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, cut his trip short to return to India for an emergency meeting with national security officials. Modi vowed that those behind the attacks would face justice, affirming, "Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable."

Tensions in Kashmir: An Ongoing Struggle

Kashmir has been a flashpoint of violence since 1989, with an ongoing insurgency leading to thousands of deaths. The region, claimed by both India and Pakistan, has experienced escalated tensions since the revocation of Kashmir's special status by India in 2019, a move viewed unfavorably by Pakistan, which claims to only offer moral support to insurgents.

The MFA has advised any Singaporeans in India needing assistance to contact Singapore's High Commission in New Delhi, as well as consulates in Mumbai or Chennai for consular help. A 24-hour hotline is also available for urgent support.

As the situation unfolds, extensive security operations are being conducted in Pahalgam, with authorities questioning individuals previously suspected of militant sympathies, aiming to curb further violence and restore peace in the region.
