Singapore-Malaysia Rapid Transit System Set to Launch Tracks This Year: What You Need to Know!
SINGAPORE: The highly anticipated Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) is poised to make significant progress, with the installation of rail systems scheduled to begin by the end of this year.
This pivotal phase will include extensive track laying alongside crucial installations such as signaling, communications, integrated supervisory control, and traction power supply systems. These advancements are part of an ambitious initiative to enhance cross-border transit between Singapore and Malaysia, a fact reaffirmed by a joint statement from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), Malaysia’s Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), and RTS Operations (RTSO).
Following a momentous connection ceremony on January 11 this year, which celebrated the link at the heart of the RTS's cross-sea bridge, both countries have made significant headway in the civil infrastructure developments necessary for the project. Key components include stations, tunnels, viaducts, and depots, all designed to support efficient transit for passengers.
On the Singapore side, over 80% of the civil works are already complete, with the majestic sea and land viaducts nearing finalization. The remaining tasks involve essential roadworks, electrical system installation, and customs facilities construction, all critical for seamless operations.
A significant integration will also occur with the existing Thomson-East Coast MRT Line at the Woodlands North MRT Station, expected to facilitate smooth passenger transfers when the new system launches. This integration is slated to kick off in the upcoming year, further enhancing connectivity in the region.
In Malaysia, construction progress is impressive, with around 93% of the necessary infrastructure already completed. RTS Operations (RTSO) initiated track laying activities on September 30, and they are on track to assume responsibility for finishing the remaining infrastructure works by year-end.
To commemorate the partnership between Singapore and Malaysia in advancing the RTS, a symbolic structure resembling a handshake was unveiled at the sea viaduct junction. This landmark serves as a testament to the collaborative spirit guiding this transformative project.
As excitement builds, many wonder how this project will reshape regional travel and improve the daily commute for thousands. Stay tuned for updates on this groundbreaking venture, and don’t miss your chance to witness history in the making!
