A Game-Changer for Singapore: SPP Launches Manifesto

SINGAPORE – The Singapore People’s Party (SPP) is shaking things up with the launch of its exciting new manifesto, just in time for the highly anticipated 2025 General Election on May 3. This 16-page action plan, aptly named "It Is Time," was unveiled on April 19, setting the stage for the party to contest in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC and Potong Pasir SMC.

Innovative Economic Solutions at the Forefront

The manifesto addresses crucial issues facing the nation with nine comprehensive themes that advocate for economic stability and fairness. A highlight of the plan includes a radical proposal to distribute government budget surpluses as Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers to aid Singapore's lower-income citizens amidst soaring inflation and living expenses. Additionally, the SPP is championing progressive taxation measures, stating that the income tax rates should be raised for the top 2% of earners and calling for the reinstatement of estate duty for the ultra-wealthy.

Addressing Job Security and Economic Cooperation

The SPP doesn’t stop there; they aim to tackle job insecurity head-on. One key proposal is to re-evaluate the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), aimed at mitigating concerns over labor influx. The party is also calling for a gradual reduction of special and Employment Pass quotas in sectors ripe for automation.

Investing in Reliable Public Transport

On the public transport front, the SPP is advocating for significant investments into MRT maintenance to ensure reliability and prevent major service disruptions—something many commuters will surely celebrate.

Looking Back: SPP’s Performance in 2020

Reflecting on past efforts, in 2020 the SPP put forth a 24-page manifesto that saw them contesting the same constituencies. The party achieved an impressive 32.77% of the vote in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, with the then SPP chairman, Jose Raymond, securing 39.33% in Potong Pasir.

Who’s Joining the Race?

As the party gears up for GE2025, Secretary-General Steve Chia is confirmed to return to the fray in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, while details of the other candidates remain under wraps. The anticipation is palpable as voters await to see how these proposals will resonate!
