At 86 years old, Archbishop Chia is a notable figure in Singapore's religious landscape, having made history as the first Singapore-born individual to hold the prestigious title of Archbishop. He stepped down from his official responsibilities in May 2013, receiving the title of Archbishop Emeritus.

Chia's health has experienced tumultuous moments in the past. In February 2014, he fell and sustained a brain hemorrhage, leading to a period of coma. Fortunately, after a month-long struggle, he awoke, with reports indicating that the clot in his brain had resolved.

Born on April 8, 1938, in a modest attap house in Hougang, Chia was raised in a devout Catholic family that instilled in him strong spiritual values. He has described his childhood as 'simple but happy,' reflecting the close-knit community and family support he experienced during his formative years.

His journey in the church began with his ordination as a priest on January 26, 1964, where he served at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Recognized for his dedication and leadership, Chia was appointed by then-Archbishop Gregory Yong to establish the Singapore Pastoral Institute (SPI), serving as its Director from 1978 to 1990.

Historic Moment of Elevation

Chia's elevation to the Archbishop of Singapore took place on October 7, 2001, in a historic Episcopal Ordination ceremony at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. This momentous occasion was witnessed by then-President S R Nathan, numerous state dignitaries, 16 bishops, nearly 200 priests, and around 11,000 faithful Catholics, alongside representatives from other major faiths in Singapore, highlighting the deep respect and affection the community holds for him.
