AUGUSTA'S Newest Star Hits the Greens
In a monumental moment for Singaporean sports, 23-year-old Hiroshi Tai made his much-anticipated Masters debut, but the journey was tougher than expected.
A Promising Start Turns Challenging
On April 12, Tai had a rocky round two, finishing five-over par with a score of 77. This pushed his total score to six-over 150, leaving him unable to make the cut set at two-over par. His first round had shown promise, as he finished tied for 38th with a solid one-over 73.
The Struggles Unveiled
Unfortunately, the second round tested Tai’s resolve. He struggled with three bogeys on holes 4, 7, and 11, along with a double bogey on the 15th. The pressure of the Masters stage proved challenging, but Tai's spirit remained undeterred.
A Historic Achievement Regardless
Despite not advancing to the weekend rounds, Tai's presence at the Masters symbolizes a major milestone for Singapore golf. His qualification came on the heels of a groundbreaking victory at the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Individual Championship in May 2024, marking him as the first Singaporean to accomplish this feat.
Recognition for a Rising Star
Just a month after that victory, Tai made history again by becoming Singapore’s first representative at the US Open. His remarkable performances throughout the 2024 season earned him the prestigious title of Male Golfer of the Year at the Singapore Golf Association Annual Gala and Awards.
The Future Looks Bright
While the Masters did not play out as Tai hoped, his journey is just beginning. As he continues to hone his skills, fans and golf enthusiasts alike eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for this young golfer from Singapore.
