Singapore's Port Breaks Container Handling Record
In an astonishing achievement, Singapore's largest port operator, PSA International, has managed to handle more than 40 million shipping containers, known as twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), in 2024. This milestone marks a significant surge from the previous year, surpassing the 2023 record of 39.01 million TEUs and solidifying Singapore’s stature as a crucial hub in global maritime trade.
Government and Industry Support
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat praised this accomplishment in a Facebook announcement made on December 27, highlighting that the port is on course to set new records in total cargo throughput and bunker sales for the year. The spirit of collaboration among industry stakeholders and a pro-business environment were credited as key factors driving this achievement.
Investment in New Facilities
Mr. Ong Kim Pong, Group Chief Executive of PSA International, heralded the record throughput as a remarkable milestone, stating that the operator is committed to enhancing the integration of port operations with related services to foster a more cohesive port ecosystem. In line with this vision, PSA has begun construction on a state-of-the-art $647.5 million Tuas warehousing facility that will feature advanced robotics and automation technologies.
Future Developments at Tuas Port
Set to open in the second quarter of 2027, the Tuas facility will cover over 185,000 square meters and prioritize handling dangerous and cold-storage goods, such as pharmaceuticals and specialized chemicals. This development is pivotal as Tuas Port, once fully operational in the 2040s, is projected to manage an impressive 65 million TEUs, securing its title as the world's largest automated port.
Current and Future Operations
Currently, 10 of Tuas Port's total 66 container berths are active, with an additional berth slated to launch operations by the end of 2024. The strategic plan includes relocating operations from older terminals like Tanjong Pagar, Keppel, and Brani to the new $20 billion mega port by 2027, while the Pasir Panjang terminal will remain operational until its consolidation into Tuas by the 2040s.
Singapore's Global Standing
In a competitive global landscape, Singapore's port's record achievement accentuates its position as one of the busiest ports in the world, trailing only the Port of Shanghai, which recently hit a groundbreaking record of handling over 50 million TEUs annually.
Commitment to Future Growth
As the maritime industry continually evolves, Mr. Nelson Quek, the regional CEO of Southeast Asia at PSA International, confirmed the company's dedication to collaborating with both public and private sectors to foster new capabilities. This commitment aims to fortify Singapore’s standing as a vital global trade hub and a leading maritime authority.
