SpaceX Launches Classified NROL-69 Mission
In an impressive display of technological prowess, SpaceX launched a classified payload on NROL-69 for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) from Cape Canaveral on Monday afternoon, marking another significant achievement in the company's string of successful missions.
Launch Details
The Falcon 9 rocket, which took flight at precisely 1:48 p.m. Eastern Time from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Space Launch Complex 40, successfully deployed its payload into orbit. This launch marks the 24th mission from the Space Coast in 2025, with SpaceX being responsible for nearly all of these launches.
First-Stage Booster's Successful Recovery
A highlight of this mission was the first-stage booster, which flew for the second time and made a spectacular recovery landing at Landing Zone 1 in Canaveral. Residents of Central Florida might have delightedly heard the characteristic sonic booms signaling the booster’s return.
Mission Collaboration and Contract Value
This classified mission was executed in collaboration with the U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command under the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) program. The NROL-69 mission was part of a contract awarded to SpaceX in 2021, valued at a whopping $160 million, and was initially scheduled to launch no later than fall 2023.
Mission Emblem and Its Significance
The mission emblem, featuring an origami hummingbird and the Latin phrase 'Numquan Hibernare,' which translates to 'never hibernate,' encapsulates the mission's essence. As stated in the mission's press materials, 'The Hummingbird illustrates the speed and agility with which we provide an advantage to the nation and its allies. Our bird is ever vigilant.'
SpaceX’s Position in NRO Missions
Interestingly, this marks the third mission SpaceX has undertaken for the NRO, yet it's the first under the current NSSL Phase 2 contract, which spans from 2020 to 2024. SpaceX is set to complete one final mission under this contract, while the United Launch Alliance (ULA) has six missions scheduled.
Future of NSSL Contracts
However, ULA’s plans hinge on the certification of its Vulcan rocket by the Space Force, currently stalling its mission schedule and resulting in a backlog of 25 missions. Meanwhile, the Space Force is progressing with new mission orders under the NSSL Phase 3 contract, with substantial task orders yet to be finalized.
Awards Under Phase 3 Contracts
Although the total values for these new contracts remain undisclosed, the previous Phase 2 contracts, which were divided between ULA and SpaceX, came to an estimated $8.5 billion. Furthermore, initial orders from the new Phase 3 contract have already been awarded to SpaceX, including a pair of launches for the NRO.
