SINGAPORE: The Singapore People's Party (SPP) is feeling hopeful about its chances in the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) following the retirement announcement of Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen from the People's Action Party (PAP). SPP secretary-general Steve Chia is gearing up for a more competitive election on May 3.
Ng Eng Hen, a formidable figure in Singapore politics, has represented Bishan-Toa Payoh since his election in 2001. During a recent walkabout at Block 75 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh Food Centre, Chia expressed his relief at Ng's exit, acknowledging the Minister's significant influence in the area.
Chia stated, "Without Dr Ng at the helm, we believe we can secure over 40% of the votes. We are not here just to participate; we're committed to fighting for a victory against the odds. It's about ensuring a fair and responsible contest."
Ng’s political career has spanned nearly 24 years, during which he has held key positions such as Minister for Education and Minister for Manpower. He has consistently defeated SPP candidates in the past three elections. In 2020, Chia led his team to a noteworthy 32.77% of the vote against Ng.
This election cycle, Chia will face a new PAP team led by Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat, comprising Mr. Saktiandi Supaat and two fresh faces: charity director Elysa Chen and social entrepreneur Cai Yinzhou. Chia’s team will feature two new candidates: operational executive Muhammad Norhakim and self-employed Lim Rui Xian. While he teased the identity of a potential fourth candidate, he hinted it could be either party chairman Melvyn Chiu or treasurer Williamson Lee, both veterans from the last election.
With 98,505 registered voters in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, Chia remains optimistic but realistic about the challenges facing opposition parties. He remarked, "For most opposition parties, defeating the incumbent is always a steep climb. I believe that only the Workers' Party holds a solid chance of securing another GRC this time around."
In addition to Bishan-Toa Payoh, the SPP is also looking to contest in Potong Pasir SMC, where another opposition group, the People's Alliance for Reform (PAR), has announced intentions to run. Chia has reached out to PAR to avoid a three-way contest but is prepared to proceed if they remain insistent.
"We are committed to contesting Potong Pasir, and we will put forth a candidate to defend our position there," he affirmed, keeping the identity of the potential contestant under wraps but suggesting it could be one of his fellow party leaders.
