While wakes generally adhere to traditional religious customs, this gathering at Dawson Road took a playful and nostalgic turn under the glowing light of colorful LED lightsabers.

On the evening of January 7th, approximately 30 passionate fans of "The Saber Authority" gathered under the stars, bringing the fantasy world of Star Wars into reality. Participants donned costumes reminiscent of their favorite characters and engaged in spirited duels, echoing the famous Jedi battles from the iconic franchise. One enthusiastic participant even reminded others, “Let’s keep it safe—legs are off-limits!” reflecting the light-hearted yet respectful atmosphere of the event.

A Sense of Joy and Community

Among the duelists was a young child, lovingly guided by an adult, whose attempts garnered cheers and laughter from onlookers. The duel brought a sense of joy and community, easing the somber mood that typically accompanies a wake.

The Saber Authority

Founded in 2014, The Saber Authority regularly hosts sparring sessions at the National Stadium, where members train and hone their skills in the art of lightsaber dueling. With beginner classes costing around S$25, they invite newcomers to learn the intricate movements and techniques that define this creative and physical hobby. Their Apprentice Intake program spans eight weeks, guiding participants—or “Padawans”—through the fundamental aspects of duel strategy and combat.

Looking Forward

Following this deeply emotional event, members shared that they would take time to grieve, with hopes of resuming their sessions in February. The Star Wars family is committed to keeping the spirit of their lost comrade alive, as they “may the Force be with you” resonates long beyond the lightsaber battles.
