A Concerning Trend Emerges in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: As summer takes hold, doctors in Hyderabad are alarmed by a sharp increase in cases of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis. This debilitating condition is characterized by relentless fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest and can persist for months, severely affecting cognitive abilities.
What Patients Are Experiencing
"Patients frequently describe overwhelming exhaustion, muscle and joint pain, disturbed sleep, dizziness, and post-exertional malaise (PEM)," shared Dr. Aditya Bapuji, a family physician. In a worrying trend, the typical two to three cases per week have surged to five or six as temperatures rise.
Real-life Cases on the Rise
Recently, Dr. Bapuji treated a 39-year-old traffic constable suffering from extreme fatigue and irregular sleep patterns. After extensive tests returned normal results, the patient revealed his chaotic lifestyle marked by stress and pollution exposure. To combat this, Dr. Bapuji initiated IV nutrition therapy and advocated for dietary changes, eliminating inflammatory foods like dairy and gluten.
CFS Recognized by WHO: A Hidden Epidemic?
The World Health Organization has classified CFS as a neurological disorder, emphasizing that, despite their outward appearance, many sufferers are unable to fulfill work, academic, or daily activities.
A Post-COVID Spike and A Younger Demographic
Dr. A Deepika from a government hospital in Ameerpet noted a spike in CFS cases in the wake of COVID-19 and highlighted that it’s increasingly affecting younger individuals. "Oxidative stress from prolonged exposure to pollutants and heavy metals significantly contributes to this issue," she noted.
The Psychological Aspect of CFS
Senior neurosurgeon Dr. Ranganadham stressed the importance of addressing mental health in diagnosis. "Stress often manifests physically and can lead to long-lasting effects. While CFS is not fatal, the chronic fatigue can last for months," he explained. With stress levels in India soaring to 70%, Hyderabad is not immune to this trend, with lifestyle factors like reduced sleep exacerbating the situation.
Navigating CFS: What Can Be Done?
Although there is no definitive cure for CFS, a comprehensive approach can help manage the condition. "Early diagnosis is key," advised Dr. Ranganadham. Effective management involves a combination of therapy, counseling, medication, improved nutrition, adequate sleep, moderate physical activity, and robust support from family and community.
Call for Awareness and Action
As this complex condition gains traction, healthcare professionals are calling for increased awareness and timely interventions to curb its silent impact on lives.
