Angus Kockott, just 20 years old, experienced the unthinkable while free diving in the pristine waters off a French Polynesian island in May.

Out of nowhere, a 7-foot grey reef shark lunged at him, clamping its powerful jaws onto his arm. In a desperate and instinctive move, Kockott fought back with a 4-inch dive knife, managing to stab the shark and escape its grasp. “If I hadn’t blocked the shark with my arm, it could have gone for my neck. I would’ve been toast,” the South African sailor recounted, illustrating the close call.

Aftermath of the Encounter

After the terrifying incident, emergency responders quickly transported him via military aircraft to a hospital in Tahiti. There, during a six-hour surgery, doctors discovered a shark tooth embedded in his arm. Instead of seeing it as a scar of trauma, Kockott decided to commemorate the event, converting the tooth into a striking earring. “It’s been a defining experience in my life... Wearing it feels like the close of this chapter. I got through it, and I’ve got my trophy hanging on my ear,” he shared proudly.

Angus holds no resentment towards the shark. “My assumption was it was a territory thing. You can’t blame the animal,” he remarked, showcasing his understanding of wildlife behavior. Following extensive surgery involving nerve and skin grafts, he spent three weeks recovering in Tahiti before returning home to South Africa for ongoing physical therapy.
