BANGKOK: In a dramatic turn of events, Thai police announced on Wednesday, January 15, an intense manhunt for a Cambodian national they believe orchestrated the shocking assassination of Lim Kimya, a notable opposition politician, in downtown Bangkok last week.
Lim Kimya, a former lawmaker of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), was tragically shot and killed by a motorcyclist upon his arrival in Bangkok, where he was accompanied by his French wife. This brazen act of violence has sent ripples through both Cambodian and Thai communities, amplifying concerns regarding political safety in the region.
In a chilling confession, Ekkalak Paenoi, a Thai national arrested for the murder, broadcasted his admission in a livestream video. He has since been charged with premeditated murder and unauthorized possession of a firearm. Following Ekkalak's arrest, a Thai court issued an arrest warrant for the Cambodian suspect identified as Somwang Bamrungkit, 43, who is believed to have hired Ekkalak to carry out the hit.
“He is currently on the run,” stated Sanong Sangmanee, the police chief for downtown Bangkok, as they intensified their efforts to track down Bamrungkit. Reports from ThaiPBS indicate that he faces grave charges including hiring someone to commit murder and illegal firearms possession.
The circumstances surrounding Lim Kimya’s murder have ignited speculation among Cambodian opposition figures who have pointed fingers at former Prime Minister Hun Sen, suggesting that he may have orchestrated the assassination. However, a government spokesperson vehemently denied any involvement, leaving many questions unanswered as tensions rise.
In the wake of the investigation, Thai police have also apprehended a driver alleged to have aided the gunman in fleeing the scene. Interestingly, this driver has claimed ignorance of the crime, stating that he was unaware of any wrongdoing at the time of his assistance.
Recent reports have suggested that Ekkalak might have been compensated with 60,000 baht (approximately US$1,700) for the assassination; however, he insists he acted out of gratitude, denying any payment had been made for the crime.
As authorities search for the Cambodian fugitive, this shocking case not only raises concerns about political violence but also highlights the complex web of political tension that pervades Southeast Asia. The unfolding details of this tragic event could lead to significant repercussions, not only for those directly involved but also for the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia as the world watches closely.
