Meet the Family of Massage Therapists Changing Lives
For over sixty years, Hajar Agil has dedicated her life to healing others with her remarkable massage techniques. Operating from her home in Bedok and traveling throughout Singapore, she attracts clients from all corners, many of whom are referred by satisfied friends and family.
Now in her seventies, Hajar, affectionately known for her 'magic hands'—a term lovingly coined by her granddaughter Farhanah Khailani—is a highly sought-after therapist. This incredible skill isn't solely hers; she shares the family's passion for healing with her daughter Halijah Tahir and granddaughter Farhanah.
A Generational Gift of Healing
The family's expertise lies in Javanese and Malay massage. Farhanah recalls being captivated as a child, sitting beside her grandmother and witnessing her talent firsthand. "We help people feel better through massages tailored for various issues—whether it's a sprained neck or postnatal care," says the 35-year-old.
Farhanah's family isn't just about tradition; they follow a code of ethics. "We know our limits. If a client has a severe issue, like a serious injury, we urge them to seek medical attention," she emphasizes. The massage techniques come naturally to them; most family members know the basics, creating a lineage of healers.
The Roots of a Healing Legacy
Hajar's journey began in the 1950s, inspired by her mother Yang Salamah, who tended to their kampung neighbors' aches and pains. "My mom's 'magic hands' made a difference in so many lives," Hajar recalls.
Growing up observing her family’s commitment to healing, Hajar decided to follow in her mother's footsteps. Though sharing this skill required overcoming initial discomfort, Hajar found joy in making others feel better.
A Journey Through Pain and Healing
Halijah, Hajar's daughter, remembers her awkwardness about massaging others at first but gained confidence as she attended to clients, particularly new mothers seeking relief. Thanks to her mother and grandmother’s guidance, Halijah developed expertise in prenatal and postnatal massages soon after becoming a mother herself.
Farhanah's passion for the craft evolved from early childhood, where she would assist her grandmother during sessions. Stepping into the massage profession, she soon began taking on her own clients, fulfilling a growing demand as her family business flourished.
A 24/7 Lifestyle of Care
Hajar's work often spills into late nights, with clients arriving at all hours, sometimes even knocking on doors at 3 AM. Education in empathy and care is key: "It’s a blessing to help others through pain. My family embodies that truth every day," says Farhanah.
Continuing the Family Legacy
As the fourth generation of this healing family, Farhanah feels a strong connection to her roots. Despite having two sons rather than daughters, she believes the legacy of massage can thrive in anyone open to learning.
Her eldest son shows interest in the craft, engaging in simple tasks like massaging heads and hands. Farhanah finds joy in involving him, hoping to pass on her family's skills to him, regardless of traditional gender roles.
A Tradition to Cherish
Hajar expresses immense pride knowing her children and grandchildren care to continue this tradition. "I believe God gave my mother this talent to help people heal," she says. Her wish is for this legacy of care and compassion to endure for generations to come.
