In a significant step to expand its footprint in the U.S. gas industry, TG Natural Resources LLC (TGNR)—a partnership between Tokyo Gas and Castleton Commodities International—has acquired a 70% stake in Chevron’s east Texas gas assets for a staggering $525 million. This announcement was made by the company on Tuesday, marking a pivotal development in Tokyo Gas's U.S. energy portfolio.
TGNR is not new to the shale gas scene; it already ranks as the fourth largest producer in the Haynesville shale basin. This strategic acquisition is expected to create synergies exceeding $170 million during the development phase of the asset, according to Craig Jarchow, CEO of TGNR.
The Haynesville basin, strategically located in east Texas and northwest Louisiana, is poised for significant growth. Thanks to its proximity to liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities on the Gulf Coast, it has garnered the attention of investors, especially with the increasing push for U.S. gas exports under the Biden administration's energy strategy.
Yoshihisa Yamada, senior general manager of Tokyo Gas, emphasized the foresight behind the investment, stating that discussions were underway long before the new administration’s energy plans took shape. This deal aligns with the mutual goal of both Japan and the U.S. to enhance energy security by increasing LNG supplies from America to Japan.
The acquired assets are projected to yield approximately 1.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day by 2030. Yamada added that while Tokyo Gas is contemplating further investments in LNG liquefaction within the United States, no definitive plans have been made yet.
Tokyo Gas, Japan’s largest provider of city gas, has expressed its intent to boost collaboration between its LNG trading and shale gas sectors in the U.S. This strategic focus reflects a growing recognition of shale gas as a cornerstone for profitability in the coming years.
With this acquisition, Tokyo Gas is not just aiming to increase its production capabilities but also to play a crucial role in the evolving landscape of global energy supply, potentially transforming the dynamics of gas trade between the U.S. and Japan. The future looks bright for Shale Gas—could this be the turning point for Japan's energy independence? Stay tuned!
