Tragic Crocodile Attack in Sandakan
SANDAKAN, Dec 15 — In a shocking incident that has sent ripple effects through the community, a 28-year-old man lost his life to a crocodile attack in the Batu 8 squatter area last Friday night. Eyewitnesses reported that the tragedy unfolded at approximately 8:20 pm as the victim was crossing a rickety wooden bridge that connects local neighborhoods.
According to local authorities, the man was en route to visit his brother when the crocodile, lurking nearby, surged from the water with terrifying speed. Acting Sandakan police chief, Superintendent K. Ramasamy, confirmed that the victim was able to scream for help in his final moments, drawing the attention of nearby residents.
Despite his desperate cries, the croc overpowered him, resulting in severe injuries. Tragically, the victim’s body was discovered by family members roughly two meters from the scene at around 9:30 pm. Upon examination, authorities reported several bite marks consistent with a crocodile attack on various parts of his body.
In response to this heart-wrenching incident, local wildlife officials are conducting operations to monitor the crocodile population in the area, advocating for heightened awareness among residents regarding the risks of living near water bodies known to host these predators. The victim's remains were sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and the case has been classified as a sudden death.
This incident not only highlights the dangers posed by wildlife in urban settings but also raises critical concerns about community safety and the need for effective measures to prevent future tragedies.
