GENEVA: In a heartbreaking turn of events, a cabin crew member from Swiss International Air Lines has tragically died following an emergency landing of an Airbus A220-300 due to smoke filling the aircraft.

The incident occurred while the flight, carrying 74 passengers and five crew members, was en route from Bucharest to Zurich on December 23. The plane was diverted to Graz, Austria after experiencing engine problems.

“Regrettably, we must inform you that our young colleague succumbed to their injuries in the hospital in Graz on Monday,” Swiss Airlines confirmed in a solemn statement on December 30.

Expressions of Grief

Jens Fehlinger, the CEO of Swiss, expressed the profound grief felt within the airline community, stating, “We are devastated at the loss of our dear colleague. Our hearts go out to his family during this unimaginable time.” Swiss Airlines emphasized that, out of respect for the deceased and their family, no further details regarding the employee or the circumstances surrounding the death would be shared.

Following the emergency landing, one member of the cabin crew was airlifted to intensive care, while another was also hospitalized. Fortunately, all passengers were evacuated safely, though 12 individuals received medical attention primarily for smoke inhalation.

Thankfully, they have since been discharged from the hospital.
