Chandigarh: In a significant move to combat the increasing diabetes epidemic, the Command Hospital (Western Command) based in Chandimandir, Panchkula, has launched a wide-ranging diabetes awareness initiative in collaboration with the Endocrine Society of India (ESI) and several leading medical institutions throughout the Tricity region.
The initiative coincided with World Diabetes Day and aims to educate the public on the prevention, early detection, and effective management of diabetes. The campaign unfolded through a series of engaging events including diabetes screening camps, a "Run for Fun," a Cyclothon, and a Walkathon, all designed to encourage community participation and create an impactful awareness.
The response to these activities was overwhelming, with more than 150 healthcare professionals joining the "Run for Fun" to raise awareness about diabetes. Approximately 500 individuals underwent diabetes screenings, 100 participants attended informative awareness sessions, and 200 patients benefited from free consultations and medications provided during the event. This proactive approach highlights the critical importance of early detection and prompt treatment for diabetes.
Expert lectures delivered by a diverse panel of endocrinologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, dietitians, and diabetes educators further enriched the campaign, enhancing the community's understanding of the disease. Informative pamphlets and educational brochures were distributed, offering vital resources to those seeking more knowledge about diabetes management.
Maj Gen Matthews Jacob, Commandant of Command Hospital Western Command, emphasized the importance of public knowledge in overcoming the diabetes challenge. He stated, "Through collaborative efforts, we can empower individuals with the information they need to take proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle."
Dr. (Lt Gen) Narender Kotwal, President of the Endocrine Society of India, along with Lt Col (Dr) Mandeep Sharma, an endocrinologist at CHWC, reiterated the need for combined efforts to address this pressing health concern. They urged the community to engage in discussions about diabetes and its implications on health.
This formidable partnership also included participation from premier institutions such as PGI, GMSH-16, GMCH-32 in Chandigarh, and the Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Mohali—demonstrating the collaborative spirit needed to tackle the issue of diabetes effectively.
As concerns grow over rising diabetes rates, especially among younger populations attributed to sedentary lifestyles and poor diet, this initiative is a powerful reminder of the urgent need for community awareness and education.
