In a dramatic move, Ukraine's foreign ministry summoned China's ambassador on April 22 to voice deep concerns regarding allegations of Chinese involvement in military operations alongside Russian forces.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that a contingent of 155 Chinese fighters is reportedly engaged with the Russian army, two of whom have already been apprehended by Ukrainian authorities. Moreover, he has hinted at information suggesting that China may be providing military supplies to Russia.
In response to these serious allegations, Ukrainian officials presented what they called "evidence" during the meeting with Ambassador Ma Shengkun, stressing that this cooperation contradicts the friendly ties that Ukraine and China have attempted to maintain.
"Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis conveyed that the participation of Chinese nationals in hostilities against Ukraine and the involvement of Chinese companies in Russian military production are issues of grave concern," a statement from the ministry revealed.
Ukrainian authorities urged their Chinese counterparts to take immediate action to halt support for Russia's aggressive endeavors, which China has consistently denied.
Perebyinis reaffirmed Ukraine’s appreciation for its strategic partnership with China, hoping that Beijing will avoid any actions that might jeopardize these crucial relations.
China's foreign ministry responded by vigorously denying any involvement in providing arms, saying, "The Chinese side has never supplied lethal weapons to any party involved in this conflict and maintains strict control over dual-use items."
As tensions continue to rise, the world watches closely how this budding conflict of interests between Ukraine and China will unfold.
