University of Michigan Scientist Caitlin Cain Honored for Groundbreaking Achievements in Gas Chromatography

In an exciting development for the field of analytical chemistry, Caitlin Cain, a distinguished scientist from the University of Michigan, was awarded the prestigious 2024 Rising Stars of Separation Science Award for her outstanding accomplishments in gas chromatography. This accolade, sponsored by Organomation, was presented at the 34th International Symposium on Chromatography in Liverpool, United Kingdom, on October 7, 2024.

The Rising Stars of Separation Science Awards aim to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of early-career researchers, inspiring the next wave of innovators in separation science. Awards are given in four categories: Gas Chromatography (GC), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Biopharmaceutical Analysis, and Pharmaceutical Analysis. Cain's selection as the award recipient was made by an independent panel of experts chaired by John Langley from the University of Southampton, underscoring her significance in the gas chromatography landscape.

Caitlin launched her academic journey at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Forensic Science in 2019. She went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Washington, culminating in her dissertation research completed in 2024 under the mentorship of Professor Robert Synovec. Her groundbreaking doctoral research focused on innovative non-targeted data analysis techniques designed to enhance analyte discovery in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-MS (GC×GC-MS) platforms.

Throughout her academic career, Cain has made significant contributions to her field, co-authoring over 20 journal publications and book chapters, with 14 as the first author. This prolific output illustrates her commitment to advancing knowledge in analytical chemistry and demonstrates her capacity as a leading voice in the discipline.
